Serendipity and a Missed Opportunity
I haven’t shared any photos from my in-progress Exposed project yet on this blog, so I thought I’d share a couple of recent shots that highlight two varying approaches.
As I’m sure is the case with many photographers, I’m currently shooting for a couple of projects at once. I haven’t shared any photos from my in-progress Exposed project yet on this blog, so I thought I’d share a couple of recent shots that highlight two varying approaches.
Let me know in the comments if you’re shooting a number of projects at the same time! (And what they are!) Or if you have some good serendipitous or missed opportunity stories…
The central idea behind Exposed is documenting examples of differing building practices, and how they change over time due to the weather or man-made factors.
I’ll post a few photos from the project below the two featured photos in this post to give you guys more of an idea where the project is heading!
Last Friday morning, I dropped my car off at the garage, again, and embarked on my now-traditional cycle back home. At the foot of a deceptively long climb followed by a tricky blind-corner downhill, I pulled over to check everything was good with the bike and seat bag containing my keys, wallet and other important items. I certainly didn’t want to be blasting down the hill with these important items flying out of my bag…
Anyway, as I looked up from my bike, I was greeted by the below scene, almost perfectly composed, with the ideal subject of that exposed brickwork perfectly formed in the foreground! I’m not sure why the bricks were laid there, just outside a large house set back from the road, seems quite an expensive way to fill in a gap, perhaps the owners had more money than sense?
Now for the missed opportunity! I had been driving past a large hole in a old brick wall for months, a vehicle must have created it at some point, but left the top of the wall in tact somehow, leaving a rough oval shape. The idea was to photograph that hole, with pure green grass from the park behind showing through the hole.
Unfortunately, the hole was recently repaired before I could shoot it. Frustrating, even though I had months to get the photo and the rebuilt wall does still fit it the Exposed project brief! I’ll endeavour to refine this photo to make up for the missed opportunity somewhat…
