This post on Rob Walker’s The Art of Noticing crystallizes what I’ve been into recently - exploring the local area, coping during Covid, and using exercise to keep the mind and body healthy.
The original post from Alastair Humphreys can be found on his blog here.
In January, I intend to purchase a custom-made map and use it to plan routes to explore and photograph certain parts of the area, particularly off-road or hard to reach places.
The exploration will be undertaken using a mixture of running and cycling, depending on the type of route I’d be doing. Running might be more useful for certain roadside routes, while cycling would be better for more heavy off-road routes, or more long distance routes. You could even make a case for a combination of the two on the same route!
Below is a quick screenshot of the above ordance survey map, which takes into account the area between Batley, Morley, Dewsbury and Wakefield, so quite a large area to get into!
I’ll be updating this newsletter as and when I can, but for more up to date info, you can follow me on Strava to see every route before the write up!
